More about our Max Castle
Meet Max. He’s old school and we love him for it!
Max Castle turned 70 in January 2018 and we’re so grateful that his experience and they way he breeds and grows our animals is no different now to how he’s been doing it his whole life.
There is so much science around agriculture these days, with testing, data crunching and technology being increasingly relied on by new generation farmers. But not Max!
Max (the father of Steven and Tanya) has our breeding stock in paddocks and come joining time he opens the gate and lets our magnificent bulls in for nature to take its course.
A big believer in minimalist intervention, Max leaves the mothers and their calves alone to develop naturally. Our stocking rate of one cow and calf to 1.2 hectares means there’s almost always plenty of pasture for them.
In tougher times, they get some hay to supplement their feed – but Max just leaves them to develop at their own rate until he can look at them and say “that one there is ready”. We process animals when they are at their optimal rate and that can be very different – even for calves born on the same day.
Castle Estate animals are 100 percent traceable and naturally free of added hormones and antibiotics.
Respecting each animal is very important to Max and all of us at Castle Estate, which is why we advocate nose to tail eating and consumption of the entire carcass.
