Were delighted to be featured in this months news for the food lovers with our focus on farming practices, see the article here https://newsforthefoodlover.com/2021/03/02/castle-estate-celebrates-one-century-of-conscious-farming-practices/

Because the better they live, the better they taste.

Castle Estate upholds a ‘cool to be kind’ philosophy. A legacy of 100 years of humane farming practices speaks to the Castle family’s unwavering dedication to boutique animal rearing for premium quality meats.

Undeterred by demand, the Castle Estate ethos is guided by nature’s instincts, versus man’s greed, with a century of family-farming heritage upheld by the Victorian-based Castle clan.

A project of love, Castle Estate cultivates exemplary meat in alignment with nature’s course, free from artificial intervention or hormones. This means the animal is forever the focal point of care for the Castle family farmer, with tremendous respect shown in the trajectory undergone from paddock to plate.

“Compassion is paramount to us when it comes to rearing animals for the purpose of food. Ultimately, a stress-free, happy animal results in nutritious and consciously cultivated produce,” says Steven Castle.

The antithesis to feedlot feeding, Castle Estate animals are strictly ‘free range’, translating to a free-to-roam existence, free from the confinements and oppression of feedlot farming. The animal consumes grass naturally in daily paddock grazing, with none of the antibiotics intervention synonymous with the alternative of grain feeding.

The Castle way also omits any long-haul travel, with the paddocks situated on site in close proximity to the abattoir. This results in less stress for the animal, with no need for suffocating trucks piled high with animals together, or imprisonment prior to slaughter.

The overall experience for the animals is a better quality of life, freedom to roam expansive paddocks, shelter under the Castle Estate trees and sheds for winter’s cooler climes.

In stark juxtaposition to the inhumane conventions of factory farming, no lot feeding, free to roam and grass-fed only. Castle Estate celebrates each animal for whatever size and shape they grow to naturally – without fattening for slaughter – resulting in no two steaks looking exactly the same. It’s through this championing of animal diversity that Castle Estate shows its customers that quality and humanity can coexist in modern farming.

The philosophy of the Castle Family has always been, “the better they live, the better they taste”. And so from terrain to table, an enduring respect for the animal is balanced with a dedication to producing the most delicious produce for Australians to indulge in.

Castle Estate

Spicy Pork Noodles for us tonight, recipe from Mathew Evans, For the Love of Meat book (Steve was featured on the show with him a few years ago).

We are all back in locked down again, but cooking is something that grounds me, and using fresh produce and Castle Estate meat at the heart of any meal is a great start. I always have some pork mince on hand in the freezer, for just such a quick meal. A favourite!

The Family could not get enough, will use the leftover pork mince to make sausages rolls tomorrow.

The protein-rich meat is now readily available for human consumption, with environmental benefits to rejoice.

Castle Estate is the only abattoir in Victoria cultivating kangaroo meat for human consumption, under a new license allocated by the Andrews Labor Government, connecting Victorians with the delicious, lean meat.

After almost 120,000 kangaroos were culled in 2020 (for the production of pet food or inhumanely left to rot in paddocks), the Castle Estate family has made a foray into another realm of farming for 2021. With Food Safety as a top priority the facilities at Castle Estate are perfect to ensure that the highest standards are met to enable the meat fit for human consumption. Castle Estate enforce the guidelines working with professional hunters and licenced field harvesters to enable this to come to market.

Ethical, natural and sustainable farming is in the Castle Family’s blood. Unwavering advocates for human farming practices, Castle Estate is the only Abattoir to have been awarded the licence to process Kangaroo as part of this program in Victoria.

All harvesters looking to supply kangaroos for human consumption, must be registered and certified under the Victorian Kangaroo Harvesting Program and the relevant Primesafe Licensing. In a bid to celebrate and humanely harvest the animal, Castle Estate is embracing the kangaroo in a 100% wild, organic, grass-fed way of farming.

“We see kangaroo harvest as an opportunity to utilise the protein source like other parts of the country have done for many years,” says Steven Castle

“Reducing waste and maximising the accessibility and premium quality of meat for consumption per animal is one of our key values, and our approach to kangaroo harvesting is no exception to this legacy. Rearing animals takes years and is a process that we believe deserves respect as do the animals themselves.”

Castle Estate is now the conduit for healthy, high-quality kangaroo meat to land on Australian families’ tables. The nutritional value ofkangaroo meat has less than 2% fat, making it a healthier alternative to other red meat counterparts.

Kangaroo meat is also high in protein and essential B vitamins, as well as minerals such as zinc, iron and omega 3 fats and omega 6 fatty acids. Kangaroo also contains double the amount of iron in beef and triple that of chicken and pork, making it a welcome addition to any modern Australian diet.

Compounding myriad health benefits, Kangaroo meat is also an environmentally-friendly protein, boasting low-emissions and significantly reducing the animal’s negative impact on the land. This year, the local government will cull 4.8% of the kangaroo population in order to help farmers reduce the animal’s destruction of local crops, with Castle Estate being able to turn waste into a sustainable source of protien.

The Victoria Government Press Release regarding the new kangaroo harvesting licence awarded to Castle Estate can be found here:

Koallah Farm in the state’s south west is offering a 50% discount on all meat and free delivery for all residents living in the City of Moreland.

The fully integrated, on-farm meat producer from outside Camperdown has been delivering its pasture-raised, free range meat to Melbournians for more than a decade.

Its decision follows the Greens-led Moreland City Council vote to remove meat from its catering on Mondays and a similar Animal Justice Party push for the State Parliament to go vegan on Mondays.

Managing Director Steven Castle said both campaigns were ridiculous and were typical of city-centric decision makers abandoning farmers, their families and the regional economy.

“We just can’t afford for this sort of narrow-mindedness to become any more systemic than it already is within governments,” he said.

“It’s laughable that these public servants can sit in their climate-controlled, inner-city offices mounting an argument that eating less meat is the way to reduce climate change.

“We support traditional farming methods and the more difficult they make it for producers like us, the more food that will need to be produced through factory farming and mass production – this having an even greater impact on the environment.”

Mr Castle said he wanted to reach out to Moreland residents to give them an opportunity to show that they support the families of all Victorian farmers.

“We are where food comes from – it’s pretty simple. If the publicly elected decision makers of this state continue to make life harder for farmers, then more and more food will have to be trucked in and that sure certainly isn’t great for the planet,” he said.

“Why not just respect everyone’s individual right to choose what they put in their bodies – without this unnecessary posturing.

“Thankfully we live, work and create jobs in a part of the state that recognises how important farmers are and where we get the public support of local members like Bev McArthur who moved quickly to counter this nonsense with her own idea.”

Mrs McArthur who lives near Camperdown has proposed a whole week of meat themed days at Parliament to support farmers.

Moreland residents with the postcode 3043, 3046, 3055, 3057, 3060, 3044, 3052, 3056, 3058 or 3068 who place online orders via www.koallahfarm.com.au will have a 50 per cent discount applied to their first order.

All other people wishing to show their support can use the discount code MORELANDMEATMADNESS and receive 10 per cent of their orders this month.

T&C: Offer extends to all orders less than $250 in retail value.
